          The Power of Place

Last year, the FMPL discussion series focused on literature depicting children, women and men as they experienced and created social and personal change.  With those books, the historical time period in which people lived was critical to the development of not only characterization, but plot and theme as well. This year (2014-2015), our literary focus will be on the power of place. In the books we will share, setting may over shadow history to such an extent that the characters may seem to inhabit an almost timeless place.

In our first book, "Townie," a memoir by André Dubus III, the author shares his story of growing up in blue-collar towns on the Massachusetts/ New Hampshire border during the second half of the 20th century. As the title implies, Dubus’ identity is shaped by his youth in pre-gentrification Newburyport where he grows up with his single mother and siblings. His sporadic visits from his mostly absent professor and famous writer father, Andre Dubus II, mostly serve to heighten the author’s sense of abandonment, isolation and vulnerability. Violence and creativity are his defenses in this place in which he becomes a man.

Dr. Suzanne H. Brown of Dartmouth College will lead the conversation about this compelling work.

Presented by Douglas Wheeler, PhD

"George Washington Spied Here"

General George Washington was not only our first President but was America's first spymaster and intelligence chief and his actions in this endeavor in the American Revolutionary War contrast with the usual popular image of Washington as a simple, straight forward soldier. Professor Wheeler's lecture will highlight the secret side of Washington's wartime leadership with special attention to the story of patriot-spy-martyr Nathan Hale, Yale Class of 1773 and the history of the talented Culper spy ring in New York and Long Island.

Dr. Suzanne Brown of Dartmouth College will return for our discussion of another book set on the New England coastOur second book, with a contemporary yet almost timeless setting, takes us to the coast of Maine on the Canadian border. In "The Lobster Kings," Alex Zentner introduces us to the Kings family who have trapped lobsters off the shores of Loosewood Island for centuries. Based loosely on Shakespeare’s King Lear, the narrator, Cordelia King, struggles to both save her family from a mythic curse and modern drug dealers and become the first seafaring matriarch of a legendary family.

This year (2014-2015), our literary focus will be on the power of place. In the books we will share, setting may over shadow history to such an extent that the characters may seem to inhabit an almost timeless place.

In his debut novel, Wiley Cash takes us to a place so powerful that time is insignificant. "In A Land More Kind Than Home," three characters; a boy, a midwife, and the town sheriff, are defined and consumed by the power and mystery of the Appalachian setting in which they live. Cash transports both his characters and his readers into a world of still humid days, air thick with dust and memory and even hotter passions and obsessions. Reason and logic have little power in the land of Cash’s imagination.

Retired Professor Anita M. Kurth of the University of Maine system will discuss this stunning work of fiction.
