Annie Oakley and Calamity Jane: Pioneers of Women's Liberation
Event Location: Program Room

With Scholar Mike McKinley

"This program will explore the life and times of Phoebe Ana Moses (aka Annie Oakley) and Martha Jane Canary (aka Calamity Jane).
The sweet and demure Oakley was the superstar markswoman with Buffalo Bill's "Wild West Show," while the crude and boisterous Calamity Jane was the gun-toting, hard-drinking, tobacco-chewing, cross-dressing western heroine of the penny dreadful and dime novels.
Oakley competed successfully in a man's world without giving up her femininity, grace and charm, but Calamity Jane broke every rule designed to keep women in their place in the male-dominated Victorian Age and is viewed by some as a disgrace to all womenkind.
Yet, both went against the norm and became prime movers in the early struggle for women's equality and symbols of feminine independence and freedom."

El Hatillo (Nicaragua) Library Project
Event Location: Program Room
Contact:

A number of people are working together to establish a small community library in the village of El Hatillo, Nicaragua.  El Hatillo is a small impoverished village located near Leon, Nicaragua.  Former Peace Corps Volunteer, Danielle Costanza, previously assigned to this site, has maintained communication with people of the village. The villagers have expressed a need for a small community library. The children of the village lack basic necessities as their families struggle to make a sustainable living. Most children do not own a book, or have access to books but hunger for the opportunity to read to and advance their education. The intention is to utilize an unused classroom in the village school. The classroom is in need of basic repairs.

Students of Moultonboro Central School have been fund raising through bake sales and coin drives to raise money for shelving, books and basic repairs. They are hoping to raise another $ 400 in order to apply to "Library in a Box,” an organization that supplies books to needy communities. In addition, Moultonboro Central School will have a book drive to collect Spanish books. The group working on the project is also creating an Amazon wish list where supporters can buy books to donate. Since it is a community library along with children’s books there is a need for cookbooks, agriculture and gardening books for adults.

Some of the people working on the project plan to travel to El Hatillo in August and work with the villagers to clean up the classroom, build shelves, and set up the library. It is estimated that about $3,000 needs to be raised to complete the project.

Danielle Costanza (former Peace Corps volunteer and current foreign language teacher), Sara Costanza , and Katie Moore (Spanish teacher at MCS ) welcome the opportunity to share an update and more detailed information on the project. They are pleased to present a power point and talk, sponsored by Friends of the Library.

Friends of the Library Spring Book Discussion Series
Event Location: Program Room
Contact:

During 2014-2015, our literary focus is on the power of place. This fall, we shared books in which people are affected strongly or even controlled by the power and limitations of the setting in which they live. In The Lobster Kings and A Land More Kind Than Home, we saw that setting can overshadow history to such an extent that the characters inhabit an almost timeless place.

The Lowland by Jhumpa Lahiri

In The Lowland, Jhumpa Lahiri shares the story of two Indian brothers. Born in Calcutta just 14 months apart, the brothers are very close, yet very different. Through the windows of their childhood home, the family watches the destruction and ultimate disappearance of the lowland. This landscape and its deterioration mirrors the lives of the siblings, their parents and the woman they both marry. Readers will particularly enjoy this author’s beautiful prose. We are pleased to welcome back Professor Candice Stover from The College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor Maine to lead this discussion.

A VISIT with QUEEN VICTORIA
Event Location:
Contact:    476-8895

In 1837, teenaged Victoria ascended  to the British throne, untrained and innocent. Those who would try to usurp her power underestimated this self-willed intelligent young woman whose mettle sustained her through her 63-year reign.  Using  Queen Victoria's diary and letters, this program reveals the personal details of a powerful yet humane woman, who took seriously her role as monarch in a time of great expansion. She and her husband, Albert, set an example  of high moral character and dedication, a novelty in the royal house after generations of scandal.

Sally Mummey performs this living history in proper 19th Century clothing resplendent with Royal Orders.

Our second spring book, The Shipping News by E. Annie Proulx takes us on a journey from upstate New York to the seacoast of Newfoundland. The main character, Quoyle is a sad man with an even more sorrowful life until he returns to his ancestral home in Newfoundland were he discovers family secrets, natural beauty and personal transformation. His true identity resides in this rugged, timeless place.

Three Days at Gettysburg

Scholar Mike McKinley

In July 1863, over 150,000 Union and Confederate soldiers converged on the small crossroads town of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. From July 1-3, General Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia and General George G. Meade's Army of the Potomac clashed there in what was to become the greatest battle ever fought on North American soil.

This program will present the battle through the personal accounts and human interest stories of the soldiers and civilians - men, women, and children - who participated in or witnessed the events of those three memorable days.  The program will also highlight Lee's retreat; how Gettysburg citizens coped with the terrible aftermath of battle; and Lincoln's Gettysburg Address.

Andersonville: 26 Acres of Hell

Scholar Mike McKinley

Union Private Lucius Barber was a prisoner of war at the Confederate military prison at Andersonville, Georgia. According to Barber, when he arrived there in 1864, the "...huge doors swung open to admit us and we were in the presence of ...human beings...that  more than resembled walking skeletons...Such squalid, filthy, wretchedness, hunger, disease, nakedness and cold, I never saw before."

Although none of the military prisons in the North or the South had a monopoly on the inhumane treatment of prisoners during the Civil War, Andersonville was the most notorious. 45,000 Union servicemen were incarcerated within its walls during the camp's 14-month existence.  13,000 would never return home.  This program will describe the conditions and relate the experiences of the POWs held there.

50 Children: One Ordinary American Couple's Extraordinary Rescue Mission into the Heart of Nazi Germany

by Steven Pressman

Based on the acclaimed HBO documentary, this is the astonishing true story of how one American couple transported fifty Jewish children from Nazi-occupied Austria to America in 1939.

Gilbert and Eleanor Kraus were typical members of an affluent, educated Jewish community in Philadelphia in the 1930s; Gilbert was a lawyer, and Eleanor a bit of a shopaholic. Worried about what they were hearing from Europe by 1939, the Krauses set out to travel to Austria and Germany to save Jewish children from the advancing Nazis; they were not particularly religious or political and this was not an easy task in an era plagued by anti-Semitism and isolationism. But through careful readings of the law, loopholes in the visa-granting system, and plain old bravery, the Krauses managed to bring more than four dozen children to safety in the United States.

Pressman, the Krauses’ grandson-in-law, used Eleanor Kraus’s unpublished diaries as well as photographs, documents, and interviews to recreate a historical moment and a heroic act. Like Oskar Schindler and his list, the Krauses and their 50 children will now never be forgotten

Scholar: Virginia Jones-Newton

Benedict Arnold: Patriot and Traitor

We all think we know the story of Benedict Arnold, the American Revolutionary War general who fought for the Continental Army but then defected to the British. Recalled mainly as a traitor for his 1780 defection, Arnold had risked his life and fortune for American freedom in courageous exploits between 1775 and 1778, when the dream of independence was at its most fragile. As an officer in the Continental Army, Arnold ably led American forces in desperate circumstances – against impossible odds, in a blinding snowstorm, through a howling wilderness, and against the extraordinary might of the Royal Navy.

George Morrison will take you on a journey through New England, Canada and New York tracing the complex story of this infamous American icon.

Empire Falls by Richard Russo

For our third book, we will read the Pulitzer Prize winning Empire Falls by Richard Russo. Miles Roby is defined by the limitations and possibilities found in his small town in Maine. Although in decline, Empire Falls is full of characters that represent different aspects of humanity. Through Roby’s interactions with friends, enemies and family, we appreciate both the man and place in full.

Dr. Suzanne Brown from Dartmouth College will return to discuss this final book in our "power of place” series.

Susan R. Merrifield

We will show the Movie

Empire Falls at 7pm

Presented by Darryl Thompson

In their more than two and a half centuries of existence, members of the United Society of Believers in Christ's Second Appearing, commonly known as Shakers, made ingenious contributions to diverse fields: agriculture, industry, medicine, music, furniture design, woman's rights, racial equality, craftsmanship, social and religious thought, and mechanical invention and improvement. Darryl Thompson explores some of these contributions in his lecture and shares some of his personal memories of the Canterbury Shakers.
