American Experience:
2 Days in October

Based on the Pulitzer Prize winning book, this program tells the story of two turbulent days in October, 1967. In Vietnam, a US battalion marched into a Viet Cong trap killing sixty one young men. Half a world away, a protest at the University of Wisconsin spiraled out of control.

Told almost-entirely by the people who took part in the events, this film offers a window onto a moment that divided a nation and a war that continues to haunt us.

This powerful documentary is shown in conjunction with our April Book Discussion choice:

Tim O’Brien’s award-winning "The Things They Carried” on April 24th.

Discussion led by Susan Merrifield to follow.

ALLAGASH TAILS AND TALES with TIM CAVERLY
Event Location:
Contact:

Tim Caverly has spent his life in Maine’s outdoors. Growing up shadowing his father, who was a Fire Warden with the Maine Forest Service, and his brother, a Ranger in Baxter State Park, it was natural for him to seek a career in the outdoors. Tim is originally from Skowhegan, Maine and has a Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Maine at Machias.

While in college, Tim began working as a ranger at Sebago Lake State Park for the State Parks and Recreation Commission. After Sebago, he continued his employment with the Department of Conservation with assignments as a manager of Aroostook and Cobscook Bay State Parks as well as a regional supervisor of the Allagash Region, which included the Allagash Wilderness Waterway and the Penobscot River Corridor. Tim was supervisor of the Allagash Wilderness Waterway for eighteen years.

In 1999, Tim retired from the Department after a 32-year career.  Tim resides in Millinocket, and worked for five years in the Millinocket School System. He now writes and presents programs full time throughout New England, enjoys raising Golden Retrievers, and sharing stories about the Maine woods. Author Tim Caverly

Friends Spring Book Discussion
Event Location:
Contact:

We often speak of social change; but, of course, it’s people who cause society to change. Whether it is for-ward or backward, human beings move the course of history. Unlike time, change does not occur in a linear direction. One generation may reject what another generation once saw as progress, as each individual dis-covers his or her values and identity.

This spring and summer, we will continue our exploration of the lives of real and fictional children, women and men as they live with and create change. The book discussions will take place at 10:30am on Thursday April 24, May 22 and July 24.

In our first book, The Things They Carried, National Book Award winner Tim O’Brien shares his experiences as a draftee during the War in Vietnam. Much of his adult identity is formed by both his decision to comply with his draft notice and his time in Southeast Asia. Reoccurring images of this experience are the things he carries in Vietnam and afterwards.

Susan Merrifield of The Friends of the Library and Lesley University will lead this discussion.

This spring and summer, we will continue our exploration of the lives of real and fictional children, women and men as they live with and create change. The book discussions will take place at 10:30am on Thursday April 24, May 22 and July 24.

In our second book, Crucial Conversations, set in the 1970’s, May Sarton takes us into Reed and Poppy White-law’s marriage. Like countless other women living through this era, Poppy feels that marriage is smothering her essential self. The reader experiences the causes and effects of this divorce on the Whitelaw family. Like Emily Bean in One Minus One (October 2013 book), Poppy comes to understand both the freedom and loneliness of independence. This book is unique in that Sarton not only explores a woman’s need for liberation, but also a man’s need for connection and marriage.

The scholar for this discussion is Professor Candice Stover of the College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor, Maine.

Meet

Tom Mickey

author of

America's Romance with the English Garden

co-sponsored by Bayswater Book Co.

"The 1890s saw a revolution in advertising. Cheap paper, faster printing, rural mail delivery, railroad shipping, and chromolithography combined to pave the way for the first modern, mass-produced catalogs. The most prominent of these, reaching American households by the thousands, were seed and nursery catalogs with beautiful pictures of middle-class homes surrounded by sprawling lawns, exotic plants, and the latest garden accessories—in other words, the quintessential English-style garden.

America’s Romance with the English Garden is the story of tastemakers and homemakers, of savvy businessmen and a growing American middle class eager to buy their products. It’s also the story of the beginnings of the modern garden industry, which seduced the masses with its images and fixed the English garden in the mind of the American consumer. Seed and nursery catalogs delivered aspirational images to front doorsteps from California to Maine, and the English garden became the look of America."

THE CONNECTICUT: NEW ENGLAND'S GREAT RIVER
Event Location: Program room
Contact:    476-8895

The largest river in New England rises in a small beaver pond near the Canadian border and flows over 400 miles through four states, falling 2,670 feet to the sea through America's only watershed-based national fish and wildlife refuge. Adair Mulligan leads an armchair tour of this great river in New Hampshire and Vermont, exploring its history and natural beauty through the seasons and among the communities that have sprung up along its banks. Next, the discussion will shift to how the river has influenced the lives of those who live there, and how they , in turn, have affected the river. Much more than a travelogue, this presentation explores the many issues involved in managing  the health of this major river, and how citizens from all walks of life have created a vision for its future.

MOUNT WASHINGTON OBSERVATORY LIFE AND WORK
Event Location: Program Room
Contact:    476-8895

An infamous place of extremes, 6,288-foot Mount Washington, New Hampshire has been captivating audiences for hundreds of years.

While many places on Earth experience severe weather, few are inhabited by humans 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Mount Washington Observatory has been operating a continuously-staffed outpost on this remote alpine peak since 1932, meaning we have come to know it unlike anyone else.

Through the years, the hardy men and women of the Observatory have experienced white-out blizzards, stunning 110-mile vistas, and everything in between. They have survived a 231mph wind gust, endless days of disorienting fog, and snow drifts more than 20 feet tall. They have worked with scientists and celebrities, students and snow rangers. They have amassed one of North America's longest continuous climate records, and developed an intimate understanding of the place known as the "Home of the World's Worst Weather."

Friends Summer Book Discussion
Event Location:
Contact:

We often speak of social change; but, of course, it’s people who cause society to change. Whether it is for-ward or backward, human beings move the course of history. Unlike time, change does not occur in a linear direction. One generation may reject what another generation once saw as progress, as each individual dis-covers his or her values and identity.

This spring and summer, we will continue our exploration of the lives of real and fictional children, women and men as they live with and create change. The book discussions will take place at 10:30am on Thursday April 24, May 22 and July 24.

In our third book, Lovingkindness, Anne Roiphe presents us with a contemporary perspective on the "generation gap. " Annie Johnson’s fulfilling and modern life as a political scientist and academic is turned upside down when her rebellious young adult daughter joins a fundamentalist religious community. Annie is forced to ac-cept that her child has not chosen to replicate the independent life she fought so hard to create. In this unusual story of a mother/daughter bond, Roiphe pushes both her characters and her readers beyond stereotypes and easy answers, toward genuine comprehension of love and the pursuit of happiness.

The scholar facilitating this discussion is Professor Jennifer Lee of the University of New Hampshire.

Every Sunday with Donna Dearborn
Event Location:
Contact:
Every Sunday is a daughter’s tribute to her father, the story of a man who lived life with extraordinary kindness and humility. Their Sunday letters stop—after 32 years—when he suffers a stroke and can no longer walk, care for himself, or voice his needs. Determined to connect with him and focus on their good memories, she shares stories of Long Trail hikes, Springfield College days, birthday ski adventures, White Mountain summits, childhood moments, and more during Sunday nursing home visits. Every Sunday is a memoir about a revered recreation director and an inspirational father-daughter bond—a story of faithfulness, hope, and love.

Donna Dearborn grew up in an active family in Brattleboro, Vermont, where her adventurous spirit and love of the outdoors emerged at an early age. Degrees in math, environmental science, biochemistry, and exercise physiology led to a diversity of jobs—algebra and trigonometry teacher, Outward Bound wilderness instructor, English teacher in Korea, fitness director, tennis pro, tax preparer, ski instructor, field hockey coach, New Zealand hut warden… She is happily settled in the familiar, rolling green hills of Vermont with her husband, Wally, and their yellow Labs, Ella and Eva.

When hiker Dan Szczesny and his nine-year-old ward, Janelle, first set foot on the trail to Mt. Kearsarge in Nov. 2011, neither of them knew that this easy hike to one of the state's most popular mountain tops would change both their lives. But what followed was a hiking odyssey that lasted over a year as the two hikers criss-crossed the state on their way to a 225-mile epic attempt to complete a little-known hiking list called The 52 With a View.
The Adventures of Buffalo and Tough Cookie
is a hiking memoir that chronicles the journey of the author and his young but ambitious hiking partner as this unlikely pair formed a unique and unforgettable bond that transformed both their lives.

350 Years of New Hampshire Wildlife

Do you wonder why you don’t see Eastern meadowlarks anymore?  Are you curious about the sighting of lynx tracks in northern New Hampshireseveral years ago?  Would you recognize the call of the northern leopard frog if you heard it?   Come to this presentation to take a virtual journey through New Hampshire’s past.  You’ll learn about changes in the land and the effects on wildlife populations over time. You’ll also learn why changes in habitat are behind the decline of many of our rarest species today, and what you can do to help.

This program is brought to you by Speaking for Wildlife, a volunteer project of UNHCooperative Extension, the NH Coverts Project, and NH Fish & Game, with funding provided by the Wellborn Ecology Fund of the NH Charitable Foundation.

Presented by Douglas Wheeler, PhD

"George Washington Spied Here"

General George Washington was not only our first President but was America's first spymaster and intelligence chief and his actions in this endeavor in the American Revolutionary War contrast with the usual popular image of Washington as a simple, straight forward soldier. Professor Wheeler's lecture will highlight the secret side of Washington's wartime leadership with special attention to the story of patriot-spy-martyr Nathan Hale, Yale Class of 1773 and the history of the talented Culper spy ring in New York and Long Island.
